A Fr Z Poll

(Biased? Moi?)

Fr Z has a poll on a subject that you might have gathered I'm a bit interested in. And it's nice to know I'm not the only one!

It's head coverings at Mass for the ladies.

Who would think that something as inoffensive as a lacy scarf could be considered in some quarters almost a declaration of war, a threat, a distraction, and worn only by the holier than thou, or the down-trodden doormat of a woman with no brain?

None of the above, of course, are real reasons for donning headgear at Mass.

But if you want to put something on your head for Mass there's no rule that says you can't.

Don't be restricted to a lace mantilla, you can wear whatever you happen to fancy, posh hat, scarf, beanie.

If you haven't thought about it, or think people like me who do are weird*, perhaps you could have a read of the comments and see why some of us like to.

Have a vote, and see what other people are saying.

*I might be, you would have to ask my friends

I voted yes and for it to be obligatory. Then wimps like me could hide behind the rule. The same way as we hid behind 'no I can't I might get pregnant' before the pill.

Lol! I voted yes and voluntary.
I love hiding in my mantilla!

I voted yes and obligatory as I am still not brave enough to stand out if I were to wear one at the OF!

Last year I found myself at Mass in Notre-Dame when an African lady wearing a very large hat came into the row in front and sat in front of the lady sitting next to me. She immediately tapped the other lady on the shoulder and asked if she could remove her hat as she could not see. The lady turned round indignantly and said 'Certainly not - ladies should always cover their heads in church.' A brave lady indeed as she was probably the only one there with her head covered. I wish I could be like her.

I think there ought to be a national 'wear your mantilla/hat/scarf to Mass day'.

Co-ordinate the wear-in (if not the outfit) while knowing women all over the country are doing the same thing. What do you think?
